SOPA and PIPA

No, this is not a post to educate you about SOPA or PIPA. But I do believe that we should at least read and be familiar with these two bills. My manager told me to read up on these topics, or else…

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), also known as House Bill 3261 or H.R. 3261, is a bill that was introduced in the United States House of Representatives on October 26, 2011, by House Judiciary Committee Chair Representative Lamar S. Smith (R-TX) and a bipartisan group of 12 initial co-sponsors. The bill, if made law, would expand the ability of U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders to fight online trafficking in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. Presented to the House Judiciary Committee, it builds on the similar PRO-IP Act of 2008 and the corresponding Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act.

The PROTECT IP Act (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 or PIPA), also known as Senate Bill 968 or S. 968, is a proposed law with the stated goal of giving the US government and copyright holders additional tools to curb access to “rogue websites dedicated to infringing or counterfeit goods”, especially those registered outside the U.S. The bill was introduced on May 12, 2011, by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and 11 bipartisan co-sponsors. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that implementation of the bill would cost the federal government $47 million through 2016, to cover enforcement costs and the hiring and training of 22 new special agents and 26 support staff. The Senate Judiciary Committee passed the bill, but Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) placed a hold on it.

I know sometimes the terms and sheer amount of things to read might be overwhelming. But this is the internet that we are talking about. You could not put a chain on the internet. In a way, for me, internet is freedom. And it is up to the millions of anons like you and me to protect freedom. Piracy is a problem, yes but we also need to make sure that the bill will only do what it is intended to do. And more importantly, make sure the ones that will wield the power knows that the internet is more than — well, just a series of tubes.

    You would think with the economy still being crap, that 46 million dollars could benefit being put elsewhere. But eh, some groups are just stupid I suppose.

    Do not support E3! The people that run it support SOPA, so by supporting E3, you’re effectively backing SOPA.

    Worst thing is, they will soon form PIPA in a way that they could shut down any site that would oppose the government. It’s just sad to see the USA’s downfall.

    Yeah. I posted a thread a bout this a while ago, and Im still against PIPA and SOPA. What’s even worse is what the government already HAS tried to do without the support of the bills, like trying to force an brittish student to come into american court for linking to a site that hosted copyrighted infragmented material. He wasn’t even hosting it, and the government went that far.. They also sued a single mom for posting a video of their 3 year old, with the radio playing in the background on youtube.
